COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NuBlue donated several bikes to Toys for Tots on Tuesday, Dec. 9 to support local families during the holiday season. The donation is expected to boost community holiday relief efforts.  WITN
  • AMEXCAN announced its community leadership awards to honor local volunteers for their dedication and service. The event will take place soon at a local venue with more details to be released.  WITN
  • AMEXCAN hosted its 14th annual community leadership awards today at the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Center for Student Advancement at Pitt Community College in Winterville (honoring community leaders who have supported the association for 24 years).  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At ECU, therapy animals help counseling students ease into challenging client work by boosting confidence and comfort in class. Dr. Celeste Crawford said dogs and horses make learning less stressful while preparing students for future sessions.  East Carolina University
  • Pitt County public schools decided that students will not need to make up the weather day lost earlier this week. School officials are seeking community feedback on the academic calendar.  The Daily Reflector

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state fined the local animal shelter in Greenville on Tuesday, Dec. 9 after identifying violations during an inspection+ the shelter is reviewing its practices in response.  WITN
  • The Pitt County Department of Social Services is offering heating help for low-income households; seniors and those on disability can apply tomorrow, with full applications opening Jan.2 and closing by Mar.31 or when funds run out — requirements include income and heating info.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • ECU Football lost both coordinators as John David Baker returns to Ole Miss and Josh Aldridge joins USF – a change that will heighten uncertainty for the Pirates’ Military Bowl game on Dec. 27 in Annapolis, and Greenville will soon begin its search for replacements.  WITN
