EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mikaela Trank teaches about 200 students using a digital map of Buenos Aires at Saint Peter Catholic School. The project grew from an East Carolina University study abroad experience and gives students hands-on lessons in leadership, technology and accessibility.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Josh Stein selected ECU professor Dr. Heidi Bonner as the academic member of the Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission, and she will start her two-year term by joining the meeting on Dec. 12 in Raleigh. Her role will focus on reviewing the state’s sentencing laws.  East Carolina University
  • Gov. Stein selected an ECU criminal justice professor to join a state commission, with officials saying the role will help shape policy reform (the decision was announced Monday, Dec. 8).  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The health department is investigating a tuberculosis case at Farmville Middle School today — school nurses, public health officials, and staff are coordinating free testing and treatment for exposed students while guardians receive notification.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • ECU athletic director Jon Gilbert called for moving the transfer portal to March (currently set for Jan. 2 to 16) to ease off-season roster stress and improve student-athlete retention. Gilbert said the change could boost future bowl seasons as ECU prepares for the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 in Annapolis.  WITN
