COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Feed Our Families Coalition, powered by the United Way of Pitt County + local faith leaders and nonprofits, is urging residents to donate food or volunteer to help local families in need, including DSS clients + those facing SNAP disruptions.  Pitt County
  • Outdoor fans will go to the Greenville Convention Center for the 3rd Annual Mid-Atlantic Hunting & Fishing Expo from January 31 to February 1, 2026 — the event will have vendors, seminars, and fun exhibits such as a fish pond for kids under 15, a virtual fishing game, a laser duck blind, a fly tying show, and an archery alley.  WITN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sam Jones BBQ in Winterville earned the Bib Gourmand designation from the Michelin Guide to the American South during a ceremony on Monday. The award recognizes quality Eastern Carolina BBQ and makes the restaurant one of seven North Carolina eateries among fifty honored - it also marks its ten-year anniversary this month.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Ayden-Grifton High School, the Stable Sports Center club was founded last spring by four students and has grown to 19 members while drawing 700 viewers to its live volleyball state championship stream. The club also broadcasts live game streams, airs a weekly sports update show, and manages social media.  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is investigating a possible case of Chronic Wasting Disease in a three-and-a-half-year-old white-tailed deer harvested near the Pitt-Martin County line in Edgecombe County—officials say the sample is being tested and, if confirmed, it would be the 35th detection of the disease in the state since 2022.  WITN

FINANCE NEWS

  • The North Carolina Rate Bureau has proposed a 68.3% increase in dwelling insurance rates over two years, with a 28.3% rise starting July 1, 2026 and changes including a 1% drop in fire coverage and a 35.9% boost in extended coverage—details that will affect all new and renewal policies if approved. A similar set of revisions will take effect again on July 1, 2027.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pitt County will honor employee veterans with a celebration on November 6 at 3:00 p.m. at the Pitt County Office Park Community Center in Greenville—guest speakers, refreshments, and gifts will be offered to current veteran employees. The county will also join Operation Green Light from November 4-11 by asking businesses and residents to display a green light in windows—with the courthouse lit green for the week.  Pitt County

SPORTS NEWS

  • East Carolina won a close game against Georgia Southern 92-89 in its season opener Tuesday night at Minges Coliseum. Jordan Riley led with 22 points and a career-high six steals—while Giovanni Emejuru added 17 points and nine rebounds to help secure the win.  WITN
