  • The Pitt County Department of Social Services asks community members to donate items to bring Christmas cheer to elderly and disabled residents in adult care homes — the donations will help brighten their holiday season.  The Daily Reflector

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU’s Graduate School held its annual three-minute thesis competition on Monday—graduate students presented their research on one slide to a panel of judges. The winner will represent ECU at the upcoming regional competition in Baton Rouge.  WITN
  • Dr. Diane Majewski directs special projects at ECU Honors College where she creates events and trips that help about 900 students feel connected and succeed academically — she also leads local service programs like Book Bag Buddies and organizes traditions such as a pinning ceremony that build strong student bonds.  East Carolina University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WITN hosted its first Pumpkin Toss where meteorologist Charlie Ironmonger and anchor Baileigh Bockover led a contest that challenged participants to toss carved pumpkins into buckets—teaching viewers eco-friendly ways to dispose of jack-o'-lanterns after Halloween by composting or donating them for animal feed. The event highlighted creative cleanup methods that help reduce waste during the post-Halloween season.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Eastern Carolina hospitals report that federal Medicaid cuts from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act are causing multimillion-dollar losses and forcing them to adjust services for all patients—hospital leaders say dwindling funds for infrastructure may also challenge local economies that rely on hospital spending.  WITN

  • ECU women's basketball beat UNCW 82 to 63 Monday night in Minges Coliseum while six players scored in double figures and the team forced 27 turnovers (the Pirates improved to a record of 1 to 0 on the season).  WITN
