East Carolina University’s Phi Kappa Tau fraternity in Greenville was suspended last Wednesday after new hazing allegations emerged and it is not allowed to hold any activities until an investigation by ECU and its national organization is completed—officials did not reveal additional details due to federal privacy laws.

A report on Mumfest shows that the local festival is boosting Greenville’s economy as more visitors shop and dine in town — officials say increased sales are helping local businesses grow.

Rachel Candaso, the 2025 Teacher of the Year, visited West Craven Middle School in Craven County on Monday morning to tour classrooms and engage with staff and students — she said the visit showed how middle schools are teaching today.

On Monday, Greenville City Council voted 5-0 to drop its lawsuit against Camping World after a state law was passed that prevents fines — officials said the new law leaves no ground for the case.

City attorneys will now move to dismiss the suit in the coming days.

Kristen Hunter, who has served as the department’s public information officer for nearly 12 years, is now the chief of staff at Greenville Police Department.

In the new role, she will advise and direct both civilian and sworn supervisors—focusing on operational leadership.

Pitt County will hold its Municipal Election on Tuesday, November 4th from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.—voters must register by October 10th at 5:00 p.m. and participate in early in-person voting from October 16th at 8:00 a.m. until November 1st at 3:00 p.m. Absentee ballot requests are due by October 21st and ballots must be returned by 7:30 p.m. on election day, with separate deadlines for military and overseas voters.

Local health officials say a government shutdown may cut WIC funding and affect nutrition services for mothers and children.

They warned that if the shutdown lasts, families will face delays in receiving essential benefits.

Pitt County Fire Marshal’s Office partners with the National Fire Protection Association—to promote Fire Prevention Week from October 5-11, urging residents to safely buy, charge and recycle lithium-ion batteries since damaged batteries can overheat and start fires.

The Pitt County WIC program supports about 5,000 families in Greenville amid the ongoing government shutdown; officials warned that funding may run out within one to two weeks if Congress does not act and said the Health Department is planning adjustments to stretch available dollars.
