COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ECVC celebrates 60 years of helping people with disabilities find steady work by matching them with local businesses like Tidal Wave Auto Spa. Manager Brandon Cobb said the program gave him a reliable employee—urging more employers to join the partnership.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Beth Lang was named Teacher of the Week after community nominations; she teaches 7th-grade Earth Science at Hope Middle School in Pitt County in her ninth year and has written four books (and traveled overseas) to bring real-world science into her classroom.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Greenville City Council will revisit whether local breweries can sell liquor with mixed drinks—this change could relax Bar 2022 rules that currently limit them to serving only beer. Council members plan to decide on the changes in November while also discussing the possibility of allowing new brewery locations.  WITN
  • Crews are building a reduced conflict intersection at a busy Pitt County location while keeping the road open for traffic. The project aims to improve road safety + ease congestion for local drivers.  WITN
  • Congressman Greg Murphy requested today that his pay be withheld during the government shutdown—he argued no member of Congress should accept payment as taxpayers face the shutdown’s effects. His request comes as part of his effort to align his compensation with his commitment to serving his constituents.  WITN
  • The Pitt County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on November 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the Eugene James Commissioners Auditorium to consider renewing the five-year franchise for C&D Landfill, Inc. The hearing will invite public comments on the proposed terms before a decision is reached.  Pitt County
  • Brookhaven neighbors challenged the Racetrac gas station permit and asked the Board of Adjustment to review it after a judge ruled in July that their concerns—including traffic, safety and community impact—were not fully considered. They now await the judge’s final decision on whether to uphold or revoke the permit.  WITN
  • State Auditor Dave Boliek visited ECU yesterday to speak with students about his office’s efforts to fight corruption and ensure fair elections after appointing former GOP official Dallas Woodhouse as election board liaison — a move that has sparked controversy. He also said his team will soon release an audit on hurricane recovery funding, investigate Rocky Mount’s overspending, and review the disbanding of the Stantonsburg police department by the Local Government Commission.  WITN
