- ➤ Oceana Pier remains closed this Labor Day weekend after Hurricane Erin caused damage — engineers will inspect next week to decide if additional repairs are needed, and the adjacent Pier House Restaurant continues its fall schedule with closures on Mondays and Tuesdays. Public Radio East
- ➤ WITN is working with Saving Graces 4 Felines to find fur-ever homes for cats and kittens—Sport was found as a stray and reached a volunteer’s home on Aug. 29 and is now ready for adoption. WITN
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Greenville firefighters battled a house fire on the 1600 block of South Elm Street after 12:30 p.m. today—heavy smoke was seen from the roof as crews cut a hole in the attic and no injuries were reported while one side of the street remained closed. WITN
- ➤ A 37-year-old Washington man died today when his car ran off NC 102 near Madison Hardee Road and hit a ditch, with troopers reporting he was not wearing a seatbelt & that speed and lane control contributed to the accident. WITN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pitt County Schools in Ayden received supplies from the governor’s drive to support student field trips to museums, historic sites, aquariums, and state parks—resources that will further enhance learning opportunities during the school year. The Daily Reflector
