COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ECU students are moving in this week and with classes starting next Monday, Greenville drivers face heavier traffic due to construction detours and increased vehicles. Local police urge drivers to stay alert and remind pedestrians to use crosswalks while 14th Street is closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday—an effort to manage the flow during the busy move-in period.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Every Wednesday this school year WITN’s Teacher of the Week segment invites the public to nominate a favorite educator and if chosen that teacher will join a live studio interview, receive a $100 gift certificate and engraved trophy + nominations must include the teacher’s school, grade or subject and examples of their impact.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pitt County EMS warned residents about Hurricane Erin as it brings high rip currents and beach erosion threats to the coastal areas—officials advised everyone to rely on trusted weather updates and prepare a hurricane kit. The category 4 storm is expected to maintain strong winds until mid-week.  WITN
  • Greenville City Council voted 5 to 1 to rezone 23.888 acres for a multi-family development by Hillpointe, LLC—planned to offer 330 to 340 units and finish in 3 to 5 years. The council acted as the city and the Department of Transportation held a town hall to discuss the Allen Road widening project.  WITN
  • On Monday, the City of Greenville and NCDOT held a town hall meeting to present a $61.7 million plan to widen 2.3 miles of Allen Road from Stantonsburg Road to Dickinson Avenue Extension—adding sidewalks, a bike lane, and a new stop light on Briacliff Drive. Bidding will start in October and construction will begin by the end of 2025 — work is expected to last three years.  WITN
