  • Downtown businesses are excited as ECU students return for classes on August 25, even though road construction may confuse new students trying to locate shops — local owners expect more regular foot traffic as the term begins.  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • Pitt County deputies arrested Greenville man Robert Moore in the Dollar General parking lot on Stantonsburg Road at 3:50 p.m. Thursday—he is held on several drug charges after deputies seized fentanyl and charged him with level 2 trafficking in opium or heroin as well as maintaining a place for controlled substances with a $200,450 secured bond.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU announced that its 2025-26 Voyages of Discovery Series will have anthropologist Sam Rad on Sept. 11 and best-selling author Dr. Brian Hare on Feb. 5. The speakers will share ideas about human connection and lessons from the past to guide future challenges.  East Carolina University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sound Rivers reported that 20 sites along the lower Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers did not pass water-quality tests after heavy downpours brought bacteria from stormwater runoff; Town Common in Greenville is one of the sites that failed. Officials urged residents to avoid the water if they have open wounds — a measure to lessen the risk of illness.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Camping World filed a motion to dismiss Greenville's lawsuit over its 3200 square feet flag at its Red Banks Road location—city officials say the flag violates local code and has incurred $33,750 in citations. A supporting memo filed on Thursday claims the case violates state law and retaliates against free speech as lawmakers consider a bill to limit local flag regulation.  WITN
  • ECU trustees approved a 50 year lease of the North Recreational Complex on US 264 to Greenville, with the city set to pay an upfront fee of $3 million plus annual lease payments between $150,000 and $300,000. City Council and the UNC Board of Governors must sign off on the deal as the university plans to reinvest the funds in the Blount Recreational Sports Complex.  WITN
  • Earlier this week the Pitt County Board of Commissioners approved reports on flood mitigation + response and will soon pursue funding for a medical shelter + a key measure for emergency care.  The Daily Reflector

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials are warning that vibrio vulnificus, a dangerous bacteria that can quickly destroy tissue in warm, salty water, is more active this summer and has already killed several people in North Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. The CDC reports about one in five infected people die so experts advise those with weakened immune systems to cover cuts before swimming and seek medical care if symptoms occur.  WITN
