COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eastern Carolina Village & Farm Museum will host the free Fig Festival on Saturday, September 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with over 30 local vendors & live talks on fig history and propagation.  Pitt County

CULTURE NEWS

  • ECU researchers with the Maritime Studies Program discovered four at-risk shipwrecks at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site, including possible remains of the 1748 Spanish privateer La Fortuna—shipwreck timbers have been moved to a Greenville conservation lab and further analysis is planned.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Auditor Davie Boliek released a six-month audit today showing that DMV wait times have risen to 75 minutes as the agency remains understaffed—only 505 of 710 positions are filled despite a population jump of 2.5 million over 20 years. He recommends that policymakers establish the DMV as an autonomous agency and launch a phased staffing and technical upgrade plan to improve service.  WITN

  • Greenville hosted the 2025 Little League Softball World Series that began on Sunday with 12 international teams and boosted local business as owners welcomed more customers — Elm Street was closed on Monday for safety when games started at 10 a.m. and fans came from across the country and around the world.  WITN
  • On Aug. 4, the Pitt County girls came from behind to win 5 to 3 in the sixth inning against Indiana at the Little League Softball World Series — they trailed 3 to 0 before scoring the winning runs.  WITN
