Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.
Good morning, Greenville.
🚨 Crime
On Friday, a 17-year-old girl was fatally shot at an apartment on Grovemont Drive in an apparent accidental incident involving her boyfriend while a 13-year-old boy was injured during a dispute at a home on Sterling Pointe Drive, and Greenville Police urged gun owners to store their weapons safely to help prevent further acts of violence.
🎓 Education
Two ECU professors, Drs.
Mary Cate Komoski and Julie Stanley, have launched a four-year study called THRIVE to see how educator preparation programs can help prevent teacher burnout — a project supported by a $250,000 grant from the Belk Foundation. They will recruit 400 future teachers and use surveys and focus groups over three years to develop strategies for boosting teacher resilience.
🌲 Environment
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality will give nearly $1.2 million of a $6 million grant to ENC communities to strengthen measures against flooding and storms.
Bath, Bellhaven, New Bern and Washington Park will use the funds for projects such as a resilience strategy and a stormwater action plan — designed to improve essential services and safety for residents.
