  • Sheppard Memorial Library is hosting its summer reading program Color Our World where over 300 kids earn spots on a treasure map by reading every thirty minutes — reading longer unlocks prizes. Families can sign up children until August 8th.  WNCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers in North Carolina are debating a house bill that would let fire stations add baby boxes that are secure and temperature-controlled for newborn surrender—critics note that fire stations are not manned 24 hours and urge a change from 'on-site' to 'on-duty.' Advocates like Safe Haven Baby Boxes warn that without this change, stations may not be ready to respond when a parent in crisis needs to safely give up their child.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Two teenagers from eastern North Carolina went to Washington D.C. from July 7th to 9th to speak before the US Senate at the Breakthrough Type One Diabetes Children's Congress+ they asked lawmakers to renew the Special Diabetes Program to help pay for new diabetes devices. Their words may help keep the funding needed for better care+ a move that could affect many who rely on these technologies.  WNCT
