  • Pitt County Animal Services is hosting a Super Saturday CAT-urday adopt-a-thon on July 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at its facility on County Home Road in Greenville—shelter cats and kittens are available for adoption with no appointments and at a reduced fee of $48 that covers spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping, testing and deworming.  Pitt County
  • Officials announced Wednesday that Pitt County will soon open two recreational centers to offer expanded programs for all ages— the new facilities will give local families more ways to stay active.  The Daily Reflector
  • The Winterville Chamber of Commerce has announced Hunt Winterville, a scavenger hunt set to begin July 17th that urges community members to visit local businesses and earn prizes by completing missions such as visiting Market on the Square. Participants must download an app to register and will take part in multiple prize drawings through October—this event aims to boost local commerce.  WNCT

CRIME NEWS

  • Greenville police arrested 31-year-old Quinton Daniels last night for the June 29th shooting on May Street near Hooker Road where he allegedly ran over and shot Brandon Sherman and took $2,700 (Sherman remains at ECU Health Medical Center).  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The ECU Board of Trustees met on July 10 in Greenville and elected Cassie Burt as the first woman chair for the academic year 2025 to 2026 while also appointing four new board members for four-year terms starting July 1. Burt thanked the board for the honor and stressed a commitment to support ECU’s academic and operational goals.  East Carolina University

  • A report published on Jul. 10 said that water quality in Slocum Creek remains poor—local officials have not yet announced any plans to address the issue.  WITN

  • Greenville Mayor P.J. Connelly filed his re-election paperwork today—he said his eight years of service have been an honor—and he remains the only candidate running, with filing closing on July 18 and municipal elections on November 4.  WITN
  • Starting Monday, part of JC Galloway Road will be closed for months as NC Department of Transportation contractors replace a bridge over Cow Swamp — motorists should plan alternate routes.  The Daily Reflector

  • Therapists warn that too much screen time may hurt children's brain development — the CDC reports kids ages 8 to 10 average 6 hours per day on devices while teens spend 9 hours.
