GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lt. Governor Rachel Hunt visited Pitt Community College yesterday — touring the preschool lab classroom, the sensory model classroom with a STEAM Kindercamp, and an interactive biotechnology lab — and spoke with staff and students as part of her Future-Ready Community College Tour. • State lawmakers revised HB 926 yesterday to limit cities’ power over flag displays on private property—this change would stop Greenville from fining Camping World over its giant American flag at the Evans Street location, where fines have been issued daily since January. The bill allows penalties only after an evaluation finds a safety risk and would cancel all current citations if it becomes law.  WITN
  • The Pitt County Planning Board approved a rezoning request to change 3,319.59 acres from Rural Agricultural and Rural Residential to General Industrial in support of Weyerhaeuser’s $451M megasite north of the Tar River after a 6 to 3 vote—residents voiced concerns about flooding, environmental impact, and increased traffic. The final decision now rests with the Pitt County Board of Commissioners and a public hearing is scheduled for July 21st.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • A former CNA at East Carolina Rehab & Wellness in Greenville said she saw patient mistreatment during a four-day shift, reporting issues such as unqualified staff, soiled beds, and a delay in recognizing a patient’s death to Greenville Police and NCDHHS. The nursing home said it is investigating the claims — further details remain under review.  WITN
  • Congressman Don Davis supports the HALT Fentanyl Act—which passed in the House—to classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs so researchers can study them more easily and to boost funding for addiction treatment and rural health programs amid the fentanyl crisis in eastern North Carolina.
