  • Chick-fil-A employee Simeon Gilbert is gaining fame on TikTok for his friendly service and upbeat attitude, and he said he learned kindness from his mother. Many local customers flocked to see him during our interview — his genuine character continues to inspire the community.  WITN
  • Greenfield Terrace Park reopened on June 4th at 4 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting after $1.22 million in upgrades improved its community building, parking lot, playground equipment, and basketball courts—rental applications for the community building will be accepted starting June 14th.  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • A Greenville officer — assisting with a standoff in Hamilton, Martin County — shot and killed a suspect early today, authorities said.  The Daily Reflector
  • Greenville Police said a man barricaded himself in a Hamilton home and fired multiple shots outside before a Greenville officer fatally shot him last night during a standoff + Martin County deputies had asked for the department’s Emergency Response Team + the SBI is investigating the case while the officer remains on administrative assignment.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU is using a new plan that mixes physical therapy, sports psychology and data analytics to stop injuries and boost ROTC cadet wellness—this approach started last spring and now offers clinics and targeted training. Faculty and cadets work together—teaching skills to help future military leaders train smarter.  East Carolina University
  • Students at ENC schools will begin summer break in the coming days and experts say the change from a structured school routine may lead to increased anxiety if families do not create a balanced schedule—mixing active learning, outdoor play, and meal support programs to help maintain mental health.  WITN

  • Greenville Fire/Rescue dedicated its new $1.3 million fire engine today at Station 2 on Hemby Lane during a push-in ceremony. The truck features a 750-gallon water tank + a Waterous 1,5000 gallon per minute pump and ground ladders with a front intake valve to improve access to hydrants in crowded areas.  WITN
  • Thomas became the first woman appointed as deputy chief of police in Greenville+she credited veteran female officers for paving the way for her historic appointment.  The Daily Reflector
