COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brookhaven residents, represented by the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, oppose a new RaceTrac gas station planned 1,000 feet from Wellcome Middle School — they filed an appeal to the local court citing risks to property values, traffic, runoff, and public safety. A hearing on the appeal is scheduled for June 23 at 10 a.m. at Pitt County Courthouse — officials expect the judge to review these community concerns carefully.  WITN

  • A screening and panel discussion for the film 'Brookhaven: Community Resilience Against Environmental Threat' is set today from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wellcome Middle School — organizers from the Brookhaven Community Association and SCSJ will share details of the fight to stop a planned gas station near the school amid concerns over property values, traffic, and safety.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Alzheimer’s Association advised Greenville caregivers to plan ahead for warm weather as high temperatures can increase agitation and wandering in people with Alzheimer’s + dementias. Caregivers should dress loved ones in light clothing, ensure access to cool areas, and boost water intake to stay safe as summer approaches.  WITN
  • The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services launched a new provider map that helps eligible families in Greenville find free vaccines needed for school and childcare. The bilingual map, available in English + Spanish, lets users search by city or ZIP code and connect directly with local providers.  Public Radio East
  • Children at Maynard Children’s Hospital now benefit from a new Radian 3 car seat donated by Children's Miracle Network—this seat is designed to give extra room and support to kids using hip braces or casts after surgery, and the hospital will assess each child before issuing one.  WITN
