EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt County students have joined the North Carolina Teaching Fellows program this fall (19 of 522 future teachers in the state set a record), and they are poised to bring new talent to local classrooms.  The Daily Reflector
  • East Carolina University will welcome 21 new Brinkley-Lane Scholars to its Honors College this fall — the largest cohort in program history. The award covers tuition, fees, room and board and includes study and enrichment stipends after a rigorous review of nearly 900 applications.  East Carolina University
  • Today, the community college opened a new aviation center on campus to offer enhanced flight training and meet growing workforce needs in aviation. School officials say the facility will support local career development.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey spoke at the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce (monthly) luncheon at the Hilton today, urging local business leaders to secure flood insurance ahead of hurricane season. He also reminded pool owners to ensure proper safety by using locked gates during Water Safety Month.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU nursing doctoral student Zachary Smith is studying whether prone CPR can save lives by reducing the delay in starting chest compressions. His research (using two cadavers) will compare blood pressures from prone and traditional CPR in operating room and ICU settings.  East Carolina University
  • After quarantining for three confirmed canine parvovirus cases on May 4, Pitt County Animal Services has resumed animal intakes as of today, though owner surrenders are not accepted and a wait list remains for stray animals while adoption services continue.  WITN

  • Christopher Stembridge, a junior at Northside High School who transferred from home school less than a year ago, helped his team win the 1A Boys Golf State Championship and claimed the individual state title (he has alopecia) as he prepares for college golf.  WITN
