  • Food banks in Eastern Carolina report record food insecurity as the number of people in need rose from 36,000 to about 46,440 and a study shows that 1 in 4 children in some areas now face hunger—these challenges come as proposed federal cuts target at least $230 billion in SNAP funding over the next decade. In Greenville, Joy Soup Kitchen has seen fewer visits because it only serves meals on-site.  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • Domanek Watson, a 29-year-old from Conway, was arrested by Greenville police yesterday on drug trafficking charges—warrants revealed he had a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana and opiates hidden in his pants, and he is now held in Pitt County Jail with a bond of $252,500.  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting Friday, Sound Rivers will update its summer-long swim guide weekly to help residents and visitors find safe spots, with over 50 recreational sites tested including Town Common, Port Terminal and Wildwood Park in Greenville. The guide runs until Labor Day with results released every Friday.  WITN

  • North Carolina launched the Memorial Day Click It or Ticket campaign on Monday to remind residents to buckle up—officers will increase patrols as the program runs until June 1.  WITN

  • ECU Health opened its IMPACT Clinic at the Brody School of Medicine to offer specialized care for pregnant individuals with substance use disorders + the new clinic, the first in eastern North Carolina, brings together a team to provide obstetric, mental health, lactation, and social work support.  WITN
