ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday, police said a white Dodge Charger speeding in the center turn lane struck a blue Nissan leaving the Family Dollar parking lot on Greenville Boulevard + 24-year-old Jalen Elijah Wright, the Nissan’s sole occupant, died + three people in the Dodge were treated at ECU Health for non-life-threatening injuries as investigators look into the incident.  WNCT

CRIME NEWS

  • A Pitt County judge sentenced a man to 35-43 years in prison for the December 2022 stabbing death of a 79-year-old community advocate at her Greenville home.  The Daily Reflector

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Boviet Solar USA celebrated the grand opening of its $294 million clean energy facility in Greenville, which is expected to create more than 1,300 jobs. Economic Development Director Kelly Andrews visited Nipro Corporation’s headquarters in Japan — ahead of a $397 million investment that will bring 230 new jobs during Economic Development Week.  Pitt County

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU is now offering a dual DNP-MBA program so nurses can learn both health care and business skills to lead better. Ashley Elks from Winterville is the first student in this new program and she will help set the stage for future nurse leaders.  East Carolina University
  • ECU’s BSIT program received national recognition for its strong success with community college transfer students, earning praise in The Transfer Playbook by the Aspen Institute and Community College Research Center; the program offers seven concentrations and online classes — features that help students complete bachelor’s degrees while working.  East Carolina University
  • At Pitt County Schools’ signing day event this week, company members attended as students signed deals to join the Tradesformers program — a career training initiative for skilled trades. The program will give students hands-on training and a head start in local career opportunities.  The Daily Reflector

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Deputy Barkley is a 1.5-year-old golden retriever from West Virginia who graduated from East Coast Canines training in March and now works as a certified Police Service Therapy K9 with Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Curtis, assisting victims, witnesses, first responders, schools, and nursing homes. K9 Chilli is a four-year-old Belgian Malinois donated by a federal program who is training with East Coast Canine and will soon work with Detective Foster to detect explosives—helping protect the community.  Pitt County
  • Pitt County General Government was recognized at the N.C. Department of Labor Safety Awards Ceremony on May 1st at the Holiday Inn in Greenville—several local departments earned Gold and Silver Awards for maintaining safe workplaces.  Pitt County

  • High school baseball and softball playoffs concluded last Thursday in Greenville. In baseball, D.H. Conley edged Pinecrest (7–6) and J.H. Rose won over South Brunswick (3–2), while in softball Conley repeated with a 6–2 win over Apex Friendship and Bear Grass (12–1) along with South Granville (11–0) won their matchups.  WITN
