COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Lenoir County SPCA in Greenville cares for 72 dogs and between 40 and 50 cats as warm weather brings more puppies and kittens this season. The shelter needs food donations—dry and wet foods and milk replacements—and is hiring someone who loves animal care for the puppy room.  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • A Farmville man is in jail this morning for allegedly dumping his one-year-old dog—Franky—at the Pitt County Animal Shelter on April 14 after the dog chased him into traffic on County Home Road, and he faces misdemeanor charges of abandonment, cruelty to animals and a leash law violation with a court date on May 19 after posting a $500 bond.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, many community members and education supporters gathered outside Congressman Greg Murphy’s office in Greenville to back public schools with picket signs and a letter. The group urged lawmakers to enhance education funding and school quality—stressing that strong public schools benefit all local students.  WNCT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sound Rivers, led by Katey Zimmerman, tests water and checks hotline reports to keep local rivers clean. The nonprofit addresses sewage spills, sediment from development, and nutrient pollution from industrial agriculture & works with local regulators while recruiting volunteers to monitor the Pamlico-Tar and Neuse Basins.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greenville officials today began fining residents $25 if they do not remove their roll-out trash carts from the curb by noon after collection (exemptions apply for those with approved special conditions).  WITN
  • Operation Fan Heat Relief begins today to distribute fans and air conditioners to vulnerable adults, including those aged 60 and older and adults with disabilities who face extreme heat. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services partners with Eastern Carolina organizations—supported by donations from Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, and Dominion—to help eligible residents stay cool this summer.  WITN
