COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Apr. 29, 2025, Food Lion Feeds and the Food Banks of Central and Eastern NC hosted Volunteer Day at six locations including the Greenville branch, where 650 volunteers built 352 meal kits per hour and donated over 652,000 meals. The event helped ease food insecurity—impacting more than 65,000 people, including 24,000 children.  WNCT
  • Pitt County Cultural Arts and Recreation will host a free Community Day at Bethel Elementary School—located at 152 E Washington St in Bethel—on May 3 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Families will enjoy games, face painting, and coloring activities to connect with the community.  Pitt County

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Greenville businesses are closing as Blacken Kracken has shut its doors and King's Deli will close tomorrow—ongoing BUILD project construction and other challenges have made it hard for customers to reach these spots. Local officials say the area will see improvements when the project finishes this summer.  WITN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • North Carolina poultry was designated High Path Avian Influenza-free by the World Organization for Animal Health, allowing exports and international trade to resume, while Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said poultry owners must keep strict biosecurity measures (wild birds still carry the virus).  Public Radio East

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU Brody School of Medicine will host its 11th Annual Medical Education Day on May 1 at noon at the Brody Auditorium where students, faculty, staff and friends will attend podium, poster and Shark Tank presentations and a keynote by Dr. Christina Peroutka from the University of Virginia. Parking will be limited because of construction at the Center for Medical Education Building.  WNCT
  • ECU hosted its annual Barefoot on the Mall on Tuesday to celebrate the last day of classes. Three acts—DJ Spiff, Soul Psychedelique, and The Vegabonds—performed at the Main Campus Mall from 2pm to 6pm.  WNCT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greenville City Council members Scully and Willis said they will not support a proposal from Hinton that would end city action against a recreational vehicle retailer in exchange for a $50,000 donation to a local children’s group. They stated their decision will keep the department's actions unchanged.  The Daily Reflector
  • The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources announced that reservation fees at campgrounds and vehicle entrance fees at reservoirs will increase tomorrow — tent campsites will cost $20 to $30 and RV sites will cost $45 starting May 1. Officials noted that this is the first major fee change since 2019 while most state parks remain free for day-use.  Public Radio East
