  • East Carolina University students behind Campus Cribs won the eighth annual Aman Pirate Challenge on April 15 at Murphy Center—earning a $20,000 cash prize—and will soon finish their website to expand their student housing service.  East Carolina University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Carolina University kicked off the 100th anniversary of the East Carolinian student newspaper on Saturday with a Vintage and Handmade Fair in the Student Center Quad. The university will continue to mark this milestone with events leading up to the centennial in December.  WNCT
  • ECU’s Chamber Singers will travel to Germany this summer—competing at the prestigious International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf—from June 6 to 10. The 30-singer group, led by Dr. James Franklin, earned the invitation last fall after a rigorous application process and will perform in multiple rounds and concerts with choirs from around the world.  East Carolina University

  • The North Carolina Judicial Branch launched eCourts today in 11 counties — Bertie, Edgecombe, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Lenoir, Nash, Northampton, Pitt, Wayne, and Wilson — to provide online access to court records and public documents.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Members of the autism community in Eastern Carolina voiced concern after the House Budget Committee approved a proposal that directs the Energy and Commerce Committee to cut at least $880 billion from programs including Medicaid over the next 10 years—this move could endanger vital autism services such as Innovations Waiver Services and affect thousands waiting for care, with the committee set to submit its proposed cuts by May 9.  WITN
  • ECU Health Duplin Hospital earned a five-star patient experience rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services based on key measures of patient care and satisfaction. The hospital held a ceremony on Apr. 28 to honor staff efforts—improvements that began in November 2023.  WNCT
