EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU faculty were honored for exceptional teaching at a University Teaching Awards ceremony held Monday, Apr. 16 in the Main Campus Student Center. Dr. Randall Etheridge and colleagues were recognized for inspiring student success and strengthening regional ties.  East Carolina University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local farmers commented on the severe drought affecting water supplies and spring growth — urging the community to conserve water and support local relief efforts.  WITN
  • State officials advise local residents to secure trash, grills and pet food to lessen black bear encounters as the bears emerge from hibernation this spring through fall. The NC Wildlife Resources Commission and BearWise also recommend using bear-proof enclosures for pets and livestock.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pitt County posted job vacancies on Thursday, Apr. 16 for roles at the sheriff’s office, social services, elections, public health and transit system. Applicants can review the full listing as the county is an Equal Opportunity Employer (compliant with ADA guidelines).  Pitt County
  • The Greenville Utilities Commission approved higher 2026-27 rates in a meeting this afternoon: electric up 1.9%, water 3.7%, sewer 3.9% and gas 4.0%, adding about $10 to monthly bills while remaining the county's lowest-cost provider. The proposals will be shown to the city council on May 14.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pitt County first responders are preparing for more heat-related calls as temperatures climb into the low 90s. They have already treated cases of exhaustion and dehydration and advise residents to stay hydrated and check on vulnerable groups during local events (Grifton Shad Festival and Beaufort Wine and Food Festival).  WITN
  • K9 Boone, a training dog (part of the local unit), died from an illness during a training session on Thursday in Greenville. Officials said they will review current protocols following the incident.  WITN
