CRIME NEWS

  • 25-year-old Jyjuan Crawford accepted a plea deal that dropped ten charges + faces 6-8 years in prison for accessory after the fact in the fatal highway shooting that killed Shaolyn Godley near Staton Road on U.S. 264 in March 2021.  WITN

  • Rachel Candaso, a teacher at Wellcome Middle School, was named North Carolina Teacher of the Year—the first Pitt County teacher to win in the award’s 55-year history—and will spend the upcoming school year representing North Carolina teachers.  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Biologists at the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission said invasive Alabama bass are now in the Roanoke and Tar rivers and are harming local fish by breeding aggressively with native species. Anglers who catch these bass are urged to photograph and report them (call 800 662 7137) to help stop the spread.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Greenville received the 2024 Gold-Level Healthy Workforce Designation from Cigna Health Care for its strong employee wellness program—supported by engaged staff and committed leadership that also earned a previous Well-Being Award.  WNCT
  • The Pitt County Board of Equalization and Review will hold public meetings on April 24 at 4:00 p.m. at the Pitt County Training Center (1717 W 5th Street in Greenville) and on May 8 at 4:00 p.m. at Eugene James Auditorium (County Administration Building, 1717 West 5th Street) to hear taxpayers' appeals on property valuations. HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU music therapy and exercise physiology students are leading a four-week virtual program that offers music-assisted guided breathing and gentle yoga for informal family caregivers in eastern North Carolina. The study—under faculty supervision with two sessions held so far—will add sessions on May 13 and 15 to help improve caregiver well-being.  East Carolina University
