- ➤ Thousands of residents gathered on Town Common and First Street this past weekend for the annual PirateFest celebration (with live music and pirate-themed activities) that brought the community together. The Daily Reflector
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The North Carolina Department of Agriculture is enforcing the Agricultural Disaster Crop Loss Program to help Pitt County farmers recover after a three-month drought and heavy rains in 2024 caused $10 million in crop losses and an 80 percent drop in corn yield. Farmers must call the local Cooperative Extension to set up a 30-minute appointment and bring the required FSA 578 form and IRS W-9 — applications open April 1 and close May 4. WNCT

- ➤ Grow Local Week, a program connecting more than 2,600 Pitt County middle and high school students with local career opportunities, began on April 7th and will run until April 11th. The initiative is organized by the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, Pitt County Schools, and community partners and features tours, hands-on activities, and exhibitions at Pitt Community College. - ➤ State lawmakers visited schools today in Pitt and Martin counties as part of NC Legislators In School Week and toured Sadie Saulter Pre-K, Elmhurst Elementary, Pitt Community College Tech Academy and Martin Innovative Middle School (where students offered firsthand insights) to learn how local programs prepare students for college or trade jobs. - ➤ The Greenville City Council held Monday’s meeting—updating affordable housing, planning a new artist sculpture for the Elizabeth Street roundabout, and outlining a three year waste services plan. Officials also reviewed a potential rate increase that may add a cart replacement fee to the current $16 monthly fee—aiming to cover future cart replacements. WNCT
- ➤ Pitt County Department of Social Services and Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina are hosting events this April for National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Wear Blue Day was held on April 4 and the county will light the Greene Street Bridge in blue April 8—9 with a media briefing and the annual Planting of the Pinwheels awareness walk scheduled for April 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the County Office Complex on West 5th Street in Greenville.
