  • The Nehemiah Initiative is hosting its annual Hoops for Hope basketball tournament on April 5 at the Covenant Church parking lot on Corey Road in Winterville to support single moms. The outdoor event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.—youth players must register by March 21 and adults by March 28, and it will also feature contests and food trucks.  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • Reports allege that pledges at an ECU fraternity suffered cuts and bruises from forced physical activity and faced other abuse that reportedly included drug use.  The Daily Reflector
  • Greenville Utilities is warning customers about scam calls spoofing its phone number and using recorded messages—scammers threaten to disconnect service if immediate payment is made and individuals posing as solar panel sales people have also been reported—so residents should not share personal information or make payments over the phone.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Greg Murphy of Greenville introduced the Down East Remembrance Act to honor six victims of a 2022 Carteret County plane crash by renaming creeks on federal land with the victims' names and exact coordinates—though the pilot and his son have been excluded.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU Health hosted its annual Jell-o Toss at the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital on Tuesday, giving patients a chance to play and escape the hospital routine (doctors joined in to create a cheerful atmosphere). The event helped the children feel more relaxed while enjoying a lighthearted moment.  WNCT

  • Grifton (with 2,500 residents) entered a growth phase after the NC-11 bypass opened (in November 2019) and is planning 400 new homes that may add up to 1,200 additional residents as people seek a safe, family-oriented community to commute from to Greenville.  WITN
