- ➤ A women's shelter opened a new facility in Greenville yesterday to offer safe housing and support services for women and children. The expansion adds emergency housing and extra resources to help those in need. WITN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ East Carolina University celebrated its 10th Pirate Nation Gives on Wednesday, Mar. 4 through a 24-hour online fundraiser that supported scholarships, professorships and student programs. Campus activities at the Student Center (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Eakin Recreation Center (9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.) let supporters join in. East Carolina University
- ➤ ECU's study abroad class left for the Milano Cortina Paralympic Winter Games in Italy on Wednesday after training at Carolina Ice Zone to learn para hockey transfers. The group of 15 students and 2 professors will return March 12. WITN
- ➤ On March 2, Greenville Police Chief Richard Tyndall and Mayor P.J. Connelly visited G.R. Whitfield School to read stories to first graders as part of Read Across America Week for Dr. Seuss Day + boosting literacy awareness. WITN
- ➤ Scott Lauzon, the chorus director at West Craven High School, is named Teacher of the Week after growing his program from 5 to 100 students (in just three years). He is excited to keep inspiring his students’ love for music. WITN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Greenville Utilities earned the Gold Star designation for 10 consecutive years of exceeding water quality standards (North Carolina Area Wide Optimization Award). The press release highlighted strong teamwork among operations, maintenance, and lab staff who ensure quality drinking water. WITN
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ ECU Baseball beat UNC Wilmington 5-3 in Wilmington, raising their record to 7-5-1, and will travel to Conway this weekend to start a three-game series against No. 16 Coastal Carolina. WITN
- ➤ The DH Conley Athletic Golf Classic is set to take place this spring, offering a competitive event for local athletes at a planned venue (details on registration and location will be announced soon). WITN
- ➤ The high school regional finals will be hosted at Minges Coliseum with the 3A boys game on Friday at 8 p.m., the 2A girls game on Saturday at 12 p.m. and the 4A boys game on Saturday at 4 p.m., setting the stage for state championships at Winston-Salem’s LJVM Coliseum. WITN
