COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Businesses on Dickinson Avenue benefited tonight from a community-led Dickinson Giveaway organized by the Downtown Greenville Partnership — which handed out over 1,000 free $20 gift cards at 14 stores — as a response to impacts from road construction.  WITN

CULTURE NEWS

  • ECU’s School of Theatre and Dance will perform a jazz and funk adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” this spring at the McGinnis Theatre, with nightly shows at 7:30 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.—the production features an all-student cast.  East Carolina University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jessica Sherrill of St. Peter Catholic School has been named Teacher of the Week and has taught music for 14 years in Greenville. She directs two school choirs (Grace Notes and the Treble Cats) and an adult choir, sharing her lifelong passion for music.  WITN
  • East Carolina University has been awarded $3.5 million by NOAA's Restore Science Program to study fish spawning aggregations along the Gulf Coast. Dr. Rebecca Asch will lead the research with community partners through Sept. 2030.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pitt County’s flu vaccination rate held at 15.87% (28,694 people) as reports show a 0.4% drop from last year; health officials stress that the numbers may be underreported and urge residents to get vaccinated since flu season lasts until May.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • ECU beat NIU 11-5 on Wednesday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium, rallying with timely hits. The Pirates will face No. 10 North Carolina Tar Heels in a three-game series starting Friday, Feb. 20 at 5:00 p.m. in Greenville.  WITN
  • East Carolina's men’s basketball lost 92-89 in double overtime to Wichita State at Minges Coliseum Wednesday night. Jordan Riley scored a career-best 40 points—the first 40-point game by a Pirate since 1994—and ECU now holds a 9-17 record ahead of Saturday’s game in Charlotte on ESPN2.  WITN
