BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mr. Beast held a soft-opening event at a new grocery store at 1701 Dickinson Avenue today, offering the first 100 shoppers 50% off all items and rolling out a cart with an estimated $250,000 in cash. One attendee left with a cart full of free groceries.  WITN
  • WITN launched its new livestreaming platform, WITN+, for live news, weather, and sports updates on its website, app, Roku, and smart TV channels. The service will add more exclusive programming throughout 2026 and beyond.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Carolina University will conclude its Voyages of Discovery Series with Duke University professor and best-selling author Brian Hare discussing Survival of the Friendliest on Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Main Campus Student Center; a special reception precedes the presentation and tickets are required.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a winter storm hit the area, 427 National Guard members using 162 vehicles helped stranded motorists, moved dialysis patients, and aided hospitals and shelters, with support set to continue as more weather is forecast. The Guard works with Emergency Management to monitor evolving conditions.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU Health announced it will lay off 31 employees from Access East, Greenville’s Medicaid office, effective March 31 after its funding was discontinued. Local agencies are preparing new procedures to assist those affected.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • ECU women’s basketball lost 63-54 to Wichita State on Tuesday night at Minges Coliseum + foul troubles and scoring droughts affected the Pirates; they will play an in-state game in Charlotte on Sunday at 3 p.m.  WITN
