COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Several organizations in Eastern Carolina reported higher Christmas donations this season despite economic challenges, and local community groups in Greenville are encouraged to continue the spirit of giving.   • Students from Pitt County Schools Health Sciences Academy held a toy drive and dropped off nearly 2,000 toys at Maynard Children’s Hospital in Greenville Thursday morning to help children spending Christmas in the hospital.  WITN
  • Saving Graces 4 Felines is looking for families to adopt its cats, including James Bond, a playful kitten who loves laps and wet food (the adoption fee is $95 and a good vet reference is required).  WITN

  • Local shoppers face higher prices this holiday season and are urged to stick to a budget in Greenville. Financial experts advise waiting 24 hours before non-essential purchases — a tip to avoid overspending.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU Health is hosting Santa’s H.O.P.E. to offer a pop-up shop for oncology patients to pick up free, unwrapped gifts without crowded stores — the shop will run Dec. 16-19 and Dec. 22, and community donations are welcomed.  WITN
  • Maynard Children's Hospital is accepting toy donations to support sick children during its annual drive. The collection began on Dec. 11 and continues at the hospital entrance.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • East Carolina’s Pirates lost to App State 67-54 at Minges Coliseum on Thursday night — Jordan Riley led with 26 points in a comeback attempt that could not overcome a 33-17 halftime deficit. The team will host Buffalo Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.  WITN
