- ➤ Pitt County Department of Social Services is asking for community donations of money, hygiene items and sponsorship gifts to support its annual Adult Foster Holiday Project that will bring Christmas cheer to elderly residents in adult care homes and to adults under guardianship. Donations must be received by December 8+ checks or money orders should be sent to 1717 W 5th Street in Greenville+ the Department will accept contributions after that date. Pitt County
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pollocksville Elementary teacher Denisha Coleman, who has 17 years of experience, is named Teacher of the Week for guiding her students with creativity and compassion — she also mentors new educators. WITN
- ➤ Officials warned that a government shutdown may soon reduce funding for head start programs in Greenville, which could delay essential early learning services. Local representatives plan to seek emergency funds if the shutdown continues. WITN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The NC DEQ and NC Wildlife Resources Commission will hold an informational meeting on November 5 at 6 p.m. at the Washington Civic Center to explain upcoming striped bass management changes in the Tar-Pamlico and Neuse rivers — officials said closures have not boosted striped bass stocks despite continued stocking efforts. - ➤ The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said WIC benefits remain available during the government shutdown—even though full funding for Fiscal Year 2026 has not been secured. Officials will provide updates if there are any changes to the program's operations. WITN
- ➤ Today at East Carolina University's campus, an indoor breast cancer awareness event replaced a planned walk due to rain—attendees watched a presentation on early detection and learned what steps to take if diagnosed.
