COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On October 26, Greenville hosted its 3rd annual fall festival where organizers provided meals and fun activities for families. The event supported local needs during the fall season.  WITN
  • Habitat for Humanity of Pitt County held a dedication ceremony Tuesday afternoon at 1007 Douglas Avenue to hand over keys for a new home—built through months of volunteer work and community support—to a local family ready to build their future. City leaders and donors joined the event as attendees toured the home and celebrated the achievement.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teaching Resources Center in Joyner Library was redesigned to be a bright and open space for future and current educators with new lower shelves, a tech studio, and a collaboration lounge — features that support hands-on learning. It held an open house on Oct. 7 to show teachers and students the updated tools and spaces.  East Carolina University
  • In Richlands, Dr. Michael McElreath and history professors from Appalachian State and UNC Wilmington discussed teaching the Civil War and Reconstruction to students in Eastern North Carolina — using honest sources to tell the story of both the war and its lasting impact. The Civil War History Center will be built at a historic Fayetteville arsenal and open in a little more than two years as a state museum run by the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.  Public Radio East

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Greenville woman was trapped in Jamaica when Category 5 Hurricane Melissa hit, and an ENC resident said her family was in danger as conditions worsened—rescue teams were monitoring the situation closely. Local authorities are working to provide help while the storm’s effects continue to unfold.  WITN
  • Yolanda Williams, a Greenville native, is stranded in Jamaica after her birthday trip was disrupted when Category 5 Hurricane Melissa hit the island—canceling her flight and closing the airport. At 5 a.m. on Tuesday, hundreds at her resort were moved to a safe area—she now worries about how long it will be before she can return to her children.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • D.H. Conley, J.H. Rose and Ayden-Grifton girls volleyball teams earned state championship tickets by winning their matches—each team clinching a spot with a score of 2, 3 and 3 respectively—and will soon play in the tournament.  WITN
