COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The County Home Road complex will host Halloween events featuring folklore frights and a trunk or treat starting tonight and continuing on Saturday. Local residents are invited to join in the festive celebration for the holiday.  The Daily Reflector

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Drivers leaving South Central High School can no longer turn left without an attendant directing traffic—this change was made after a student was killed earlier this month to improve safety near the school.  The Daily Reflector

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Earlier this month, Hope Middle School completed a media center renovation funded by a nearly $57,000 grant from the West Memorial Fund. The updated space features a new circulation desk, flexible furniture, and a layout for collaborative and independent learning (the school is the fifth in the district to receive such a grant in four years).  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The updated drought monitor shows severe drought conditions expanding across northern inland areas of eastern NC, while Carteret, southern Onslow, southern Craven and southern Pamlico remain drought free. The forecast stays dry through the upcoming weekend — rain totaling 1-2 inches is expected from Monday through Thursday.  WITN
  • Local farmers said that a drought had hurt crop yields by reducing moisture for the crops. They warned that harvest efforts may get tougher and decreased output plus rising production costs could affect the local food supply.  WITN
  • ECU’s Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering received a $652,000 grant from the EPA to help local manufacturers prevent pollution. The center will use the funding to conduct site visits, offer technical courses, and share on-site recommendations until July 31, 2027.  East Carolina University
  • Rescued sea turtle Snooki, who was stranded in September 2016 and spent nine years at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center due to a fractured upper spine, was moved to the Minnesota Zoo where she now lives in a 250,000-gallon Atlantic Reef exhibit — a tank 50 times larger than her previous pool.  Public Radio East

  • Craven County may face delayed or reduced SNAP benefits in November as the government shutdown continues to affect food service programs in ENC counties. Users can check their balances with the ebtEDGE app or by calling the number on their EBT card — local food pantries and meal programs are available for support.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • East Carolina University received a $1 million grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation to fund a new Center for Medical Education at Brody School of Medicine, which is under construction and set to finish in 2027. Chancellor Philip Rogers said the funding will expand training space for future medical students and improve healthcare access in the region—efforts that also boost job opportunities in rural communities.  Public Radio East

  • Saving Graces 4 Felines is working to find a forever home for kitten Bandit. The playful feline, who purrs when looked at and begs for cuddles — he loves wet food and plays eagerly — is spayed, vaccinated, tested, and microchipped — with a $95 cash adoption fee and required good vet reference —.  WITN

  • On Oct. 23, high school volleyball playoffs saw Conley knock out South Central — and Rose top East Chapel Hill as teams battled for a spot in the next round.  WITN
  • East Carolina University Women’s Basketball held Media Day where AAC coaches predicted a 7th place finish and introduced many new faces—head coach Kim McNeill said the team will work hard ahead of its November 3 opener at home against UNC-Wilmington. The Pirates are ready to prove that preseason polls do not define their season.  WITN
  • Former ECU pitcher Trey Yesavage, once a standout for the Pirates, will start Game 1 of the World Series today at 7 p.m. as the Blue Jays face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Fox — he has previously pitched in postseason games against the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners in the ALCS.  WITN
