COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Advocates held a candlelight vigil on Tuesday at the Pitt County Courthouse to shed light on domestic violence and show support for victims. The event called on community members to help raise awareness and work against the abuse.  The Daily Reflector
  • Pitt County Animal Services is hosting a free Trunk or Treat event on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 4550 County Home Road in Greenville—families can enjoy candy and meet adoptable pets in costumes, though adoptions will not take place during the event.  WITN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in North Carolina have fallen this week, with prices dropping by 11.1 cents per gallon to a state average of $2.72 a gallon—drivers in Jacksonville noted the relief while diesel costs also dropped to $3.59 per gallon.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students and other visitors attended a health sciences career fair at Pitt Community College today to explore career paths and see real-life health care scenarios. Officials said the event offered a crash simulation—demonstrating patient care steps—and facility tours to spark interest in health sciences.  WITN
  • Weil Sawyer, a music teacher at Banks Elementary who leads fire arts for Lenoir County Public Schools, was named Teacher of the Year for the 2023 to 2024 school year. He studied organ performance at UNC School of the Arts and earned his master’s in music from ECU while performing around the world.  WITN
  • ECU students marched through Tenth Street and on campus today to call for unity amid reported assault cases and the Delta State student’s death—marchers stressed that victims are seen and not alone in their concerns for campus safety.  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the Marine Fisheries Commission and NC Division of Marine Fisheries are considering new blue crab harvest rules that may ban catching mature female crabs from January to May and limit trips from June to December to 10 bushels. The Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners passed a resolution opposing the changes + local fishermen warn the move could cut crab harvests by about 22% and hurt the coastal economy.  Public Radio East

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anderson was sworn in as the new chief of Greenville Fire-Rescue—he said he is prepared to work hard to meet upcoming challenges in his role.  The Daily Reflector
  • Eastern county health departments received a federal letter warning that if the shutdown continues, November SNAP benefits for 700,000 families may be delayed or reduced+ the state Department of Health and Human Services is working to understand the impact as new work requirements for able-bodied adults take effect on November 1.  Public Radio East

HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU Health launched its new Certified Nursing Assistant I Program to train employees at its North, Edgecombe and Roanoke-Chowan hospitals in patient care using classroom and clinical training — the first group will graduate in January and enrollment for a second group beginning in February is underway.  WITN

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jordan Riley, the Pirates' top scorer last season, intensified his training this summer by running a mile every morning and making over 500 shots before repeating the session later in the day—preparing for his second season in Greenville after transferring from Temple. He will join teammates Jay Woodard and Trevion LaBeaux as one of the main players in the upcoming season.  WITN
