- ➤ A new homeless resources shelter opened in Greenville on Oct. 14 to offer emergency housing and support for residents in need—local officials said it provides food, counseling, and case management. WITN
- ➤ Local organizers are preparing for the 2025 Recovery together ENC conference to address community recovery efforts. Details on the event’s schedule and agenda are expected to be released soon—officials said. WITN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ County leaders saw a preview of initiatives in Pitt County Schools that focus on International Baccalaureate and dual language programs—offering new opportunities for students. School officials said the preview was held last week. The Daily Reflector
- ➤ ECU biologist Fidy Rasambainarivo donated half of his $100,000 Maxwell-Hanrahan Award to create a fund for biology research at ECU and to support a conservation lab in Madagascar. He said his gift will help students study diseases that affect human and animal health — building stronger research ties across continents. East Carolina University
- ➤ ECU is testing its emergency notification system today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on campus (it will use indoor and outdoor loudspeakers, office telephones and digital signs, and the test alert will also appear on the website and be sent by email). WITN
- ➤ County leaders met with school officials last week to view plans for an International Baccalaureate program and dual language instruction—steps aimed at expanding learning options for students. - ➤ Since October 6, the Pitt County Department of Social Services toy drive for children in foster care has accepted donations of new, unwrapped toys, gift cards, diapers, and hygiene items and will run until December 8 — local residents and businesses are invited to donate to bring holiday cheer. Pitt County
- ➤ Greenville’s BUILD Project is set to finish this week as the South Pitt and West Fifth streets intersection will reopen on Friday — nearly two months early. Meanwhile, the NCDOT Dickinson Avenue project is expected to complete by late next month or early December, and additional roadway and greenway work will continue. WITN
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Srinivas Sriramula’s lab at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine found that the brain receptor B1R works with the AT1R receptor to drive high blood pressure. This breakthrough—published in Circulation Research—could lead to future treatments for patients who do not respond to current medications. East Carolina University
