COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sylvan Heights Bird Park is set to hold its 2025 Annual Fundraiser: The Year of the Nēnē on October 11th at 6 p.m.—tickets are available and an online auction will run from September 29th until the event to support its conservation and education programs.  WITN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Pitt County’s cultural arts and recreation department will host Halloween celebrations featuring walking trails and candy — details on times and locations are expected soon.  Pitt County
  • The Greenville Museum of Art will open a new exhibition—Archiving Place—on October 3rd with a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The show examines how Southeast textile artists capture their personal sense of place.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Mo Green visited South Central High School on Thursday to unveil an eight-pillar plan that supports teachers and helps students prepare for college in rural communities by 2030—he noted record graduation rates and high test scores as key achievements—Local parents and educators welcomed the plan.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are finishing up NCDOT’s Dickinson Avenue project — now expected to be completed by late November or early December — and local shops still face access challenges. City officials said the downtown build will wrap up in about three weeks as extra crews speed up work to ease disruptions.  WITN
  • Greenville cited Camping World for flying a massive American flag nearly 15 times larger than allowed on non-residential property and fined the dealership $37,500. House Bill 926 passed the state legislature this week and will go to Governor Stein for review—if signed it will bar local governments from limiting flag displays for reasons other than public health and safety—while Camping World plans to keep its flag raised.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • She is building a new life after years of drug use and jail time—she now holds a job, has been clean for two years after her mother's loss in prison, and credits the PCC reentry program as she works to regain her driver’s license and resolve legal issues.  Pitt County
  • X struggled with drug addiction after using pain pills, cocaine, and fentanyl which led to legal troubles + he lost family support during his hardships. He received help through the Pitt CC Reentry Program and support from a licensed substance abuse counselor and now works as a shift leader at McDonald's while studying pre-nursing.  Pitt County

SPORTS NEWS

  • The ECU Pirates won 28-6 over Army at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium after scoring quickly on their first three drives and using a fake field goal in the fourth quarter—ECU will face Tulane on October 9th at 7:30 p.m.  WITN
  • Yesterday, chants of 'Purple' and 'Gold' filled downtown Greenville as a marching band played with country-rock remixes in a pregame celebration—drawing national attention during a SportsCenter segment.  The Daily Reflector
