COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A ceremony honored veterans including prisoners of war and soldiers missing in action on September 19th—recognizing their service and sacrifice for the nation.  WITN
  • Saving Graces 4 Felines has offered two rescue cats—Cream Puff and Jellyroll—for adoption after a year in foster care. They are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on vaccines and need patient adopters.  WITN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Skylight Inn BBQ, run by the Jones family since 1947, is named the 6th best barbecue restaurant in the South by Southern Living — that ranking also placed five other North Carolina spots in the top 50.  WITN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On September 15, Pitt County and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center hosted an Open House at Pitt County’s Technology Enterprise Center in Greenville to unveil a new aseptic gowning and simulation training space at NCPSN@PCC that was built with Pitt County and GoldenLEAF funds. The space, designed with local biopharmaceutical manufacturers’ input, has been added to the NCGrads2Work program to help recent high school graduates gain job interviews with companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific and Catalent.  Pitt County
  • ECU Family Weekend draws thousands to Greenville and forces hotel rates to nearly triple, with some guests paying around $600 a night while rates drop to about $200 the following weekend—local businesses gain from the increased foot traffic.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • CSX Transportation will close the railroad crossing at N. Greene Street/NC 33, between Hwy 13 and Industrial Blvd, for emergency repairs starting Monday, September 22 at 8:00 a.m. due to a broken rail from a tractor trailer incident—officials urge drivers to avoid the area—and plan to reopen the crossing Tuesday, September 23 by 5:00 p.m.  Pitt County
  • Officials at a Greenville planning board meeting approved changes to design plans for a 300-acre residential development near The Oakwood School — where they also shared concerns about traffic on N.C. 43 North.  The Daily Reflector
  • The Pitt County Board of Elections approved that voters in precinct 1403A1 Winterville West will vote at the Winterville Operations Center at 2936 Church St. on November 4th. Active voters will receive a notice by mail and can call (252-902-3300) with any questions.  Pitt County

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a CDC panel meeting Friday, experts voted to let seniors and adults with underlying conditions receive COVID-19 vaccines at local pharmacies without a prescription—though they advised talking with a doctor before vaccination. N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is reviewing the updated recommendation amid ongoing efforts to improve access.  Public Radio East
