COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Eighth Annual Rotary Field of Heroes was installed at Green Springs Park on Saturday—over 100 local residents attended the opening ceremony to honor local heroes.  The Daily Reflector
  • Lou Ferrigno—famous for his role as the Incredible Hulk—will headline the 60th ECVC banquet in Greenville next month, an event that promotes disability employment awareness. The banquet aims to honor contributions and boost job opportunities in the community.  The Daily Reflector

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A traffic crash on Highway 33 in Grimesland damaged a utility pole, leaving about 350 customers without power and prompting G.R. Whitefield School to dismiss students at 11:30 a.m.—Duke Power expects to restore service by this afternoon.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Green Hope High, students adjusted last year to a cell phone ban that had them locking phones in numbered pouches, which helped them stay focused in class. A new state law will require schools to keep phones off during instructional time in January — a rule that some students worry might delay important messages.  Public Radio East
  • Kaylee Royse, an Ayden Middle School student, had a seizure on September 8 in the school library and her mother said the school called her before calling EMS—she felt very scared during the event. Pitt County Schools said their staff followed emergency care protocols while a hospital report confirmed seizure-like activity.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NCDMV released new wait time data that shows an average statewide wait of 2 hours and 45 minutes—Greenville reported a wait of about 1 hour and 44 minutes while some areas see waits of up to 5 hours. The DMV added extra license examiners and a new check-in system this summer to help reduce waits to around 30 minutes.  WITN
  • Gary Weaver was appointed Monday night by Pitt County commissioners to fill the vacant District 6 seat last held by Lauren White—he took his oath immediately after the vote.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • East Carolina University’s Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and Brody School of Medicine received a $1.3 million Health Resources and Services Administration grant to fund free, integrated mental and behavioral health care — training psychology doctoral students and providing services for substance use disorders in eastern North Carolina. The three-year project improved access to care and offered hands-on experience to six students.  East Carolina University
