EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ ECU merged its Geography, Planning and Environment and Geological Sciences departments to form the new Department of Earth, Environment and Planning. Dr. Jeff Popke is the inaugural chair and leads programs focused on sustainability and community engagement in eastern North Carolina — a change that will boost collaborative research and student opportunities. - ➤ ECU students participated in summer study abroad programs in Africa—Asia and Europe to learn about business, fashion, health, and sustainable tourism. They visited countries including South Korea, China, Italy, Ghana, and Germany to gain hands-on experience in their fields. East Carolina University
- ➤ Students and families began moving into ECU yesterday — campus staff helped new students settle in ahead of the upcoming semester. WITN
- ➤ Rising freshmen and their families moved belongings into Greene Residence Hall at ECU yesterday as part of the early Honors College move-in—seniors provided advice while more students are set to move in later this week before classes begin Monday, August 25th. WITN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ ECU geological sciences faculty led nine undergraduate STEM students in an immersive summer research program—measuring coastal saltwater intrusion and soil salinization along the North Carolina coast. The students used salinity meters and other instruments to collect data that will help local communities and farmers manage water and soil quality. East Carolina University

- ➤ The governor declared a state of emergency on Aug. 19 ahead of Erin and state officials began mobilizing emergency resources—steps taken to prepare if the storm strengthens. WITN
- ➤ Community leaders met on Tuesday at a legislative breakfast hosted by the Greenville Chamber of Commerce where State Representatives Brown and Reeder discussed healthcare, education, and economic development issues. They noted challenges with provider cuts and housing needs while mentioning recent job announcements for Eastern Carolina. WITN
