COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pitt County Planning Department will hold housing rehabilitation informational sessions on July 31 at 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at the Agricultural Center (403 Government Circle in Greenville) to explain eligibility and the application process for repair grants; homeowners outside Greenville who meet income and special need criteria must attend a session to be considered for assistance.  Pitt County

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car hit a lawnmower on Memorial Drive near the intersection with Arlington Blvd (close to the post office) at 1:26 p.m. today and injured the operator, who was taken to the hospital (with non-life-threatening injuries).  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • Jah Love, a Greenville man, said he warned a driver about a sinkhole forming on West Third Street on Saturday but the driver ignored him, flipped him off and made a racial remark after his car got stuck—Love now expects an apology and city crews have repaired the sinkhole.  WITN
  • Greenville police said 17-year-old Kiari Cunningham and 13-year-old Emiliano Gutierrez-Boviall died after separate Friday shootings—Cunningham was accidentally shot by her boyfriend at an apartment on Grovemont Drive before 6 a.m. while Gutierrez-Boviall was fatally wounded on Sterling Pointe Drive after 2:30 p.m. and two other teens were charged with murder in connection with his death.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU Brody Scholar Kamryn Henderson, a former Division I athlete, will challenge Executive Dean Jason Higginson to a friendly shot put contest on July 31 from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. at the ECU Bate Foundation Track & Field Facility in Greenville; if weather conditions force a postponement+ students can interview both participants+ and more details will be shared as the event nears.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Downtown Greenville's Reade Circle is closed today as NCDOT crews expand Dickinson Avenue construction with both northbound and southbound lanes affected. The road work is expected to last 60 days, weather permitting, and will improve curbs, gutters and storm drainage to help reduce flooding.  WITN
  • Over the weekend, a water main break on West 3rd Street in Greenville created a large sinkhole that exposed a 119-year-old cast iron pipe and disrupted traffic. An ECU geologist said unstable ground contributed to the collapse—Greenville Utilities said repairs were expected to be completed by the end of Monday.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pitt County Vector Control confirmed West Nile virus was detected in a mosquito trap from the Old Pactolus area on July 25, and the City of Greenville began spraying a two‑mile radius with adulticide on July 26. A second spray is planned for August 2 —weather permitting— to reduce the mosquito population further.  Pitt County
