CRIME NEWS

  • Jones County deputies arrested Pitt County man Hayden Fawcett last night after a domestic call led him to flee on a motorcycle from a Dollar General in Pollocksville and crash in Craven County—his bond was set at $23,000 after officers found suspected drugs, counterfeit money, alcohol and a gun.  WITN
  • Greenville police said a woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter—accused of neglect after her baby died sleeping in the same bed as her.  The Daily Reflector

EDUCATION NEWS

  • East Carolina University Chancellor Philip G. Rogers was elected to the American Council on Education Board of Directors during a meeting on July 9 (his term begins Oct. 1), adding his expertise to guide higher education.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former council member Mildred Council—who served from 1987 to 2009—filed her candidacy to run for mayor against current Mayor P.J. Connelly. The candidate, known for serving three times as Mayor Pro Tem and on the Pitt County Board of Elections from 2012 until 2018, said she plans to hold meetings with Greenville residents to listen to their concerns.  WITN
  • Berry Building Group filed a lawsuit against Lenoir County officials, saying a scam email caused $1.3 million in renovation funds for the new county building to be sent to the wrong account—county Manager Michael James, Assistant County Manager Adam Short, and Finance Director Sandra Barss are named.  Public Radio East

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 17, the Pitt County Health Department reported a domestic cat tested positive for rabies when a local family in the Old Snow Hill Road/Edwards Farm Road area picked it up and took it to a veterinary clinic. Persons exposed to the cat are advised to contact a healthcare provider—there is no danger to humans or other animals.  WNCT
  • A family exposed to a rabid cat is getting follow-up care after the animal was picked up on Old Snow Hill Road and taken to a veterinary clinic+ tests later confirmed the cat had rabies. County health officials said there is no danger to people or other animals at this time+ they urge residents not to approach unfamiliar or sick animals.  WITN
