CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Greenville police reported an armed robbery at the IHOP on Evans Street shortly after midnight on Monday when a man held an employee at gunpoint + demanded money and fled with undisclosed cash. WITN
- ➤ On June 1, Pitt County officers responded to a report of shots fired near Benjamin Drive and Lois Lane and arrested 40-year-old Byron Phillips, a Greenville resident on probation, who now faces 18 gun charges with a $450,000 bond. WITN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new off-campus housing website, Campus Cribs, will launch on July 28 to help ECU students find rental homes. Created by ECU student Quincy McKay after winning the Pirate Entrepreneurship Challenge, the site lets users filter by amenities and find roommates—and gives landlords a tool to lower vacancies. WITN
- ➤ Six cadets+the JROTC commander were honored on May 12 at the Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards for over 40 years of volunteer work at local senior games, and they received medallion awards+ at the Pitt County Board meeting on June 16. WNCT
- ➤ A new grant from BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina Foundation is expanding ECU’s School-Based Oral Health Prevention Programs to include pre-K and Head Start children—providing dental exams, cleanings, and education to underserved students in rural districts. The expanded program will soon enroll additional preschoolers to help prevent early dental decay. East Carolina University
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Officials with Greenville Utilities reported that 9,600 gallons of wastewater spilled from a pump station on Creek Bank Road into Grindle Creek after Monday’s flash floods, and over 5,000 gallons discharged from a manhole on East Street did not reach surface water. The agency plans to build a new pump station outside the flood plain—expected to be operational this summer. Public Radio East
