  • Local businesses remain burdened by high fuel costs even though gas prices dropped 22 cents last week. The North Carolina Driving School, Dupree’s Transportation and Shuttle Service, and Rides with Rob car service face difficulties covering expenses (due to fixed-price contracts) despite the lower prices.  WITN

  • A Pitt County man reported missing was found safe yesterday; officials confirm he is now under observation and expect him to recover soon.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU’s College of Allied Health Sciences completed an eight-week Communication Confidence program that offered speech and handwriting exercises for Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers. The program ended with a community graduation meeting — a small celebration of improved communication skills.  East Carolina University
  • US Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling toured Pitt Community College and North State Steel on Monday to showcase apprenticeship programs that let students earn while they learn and lead to high-paying skilled jobs—boosting local workforce development.  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The hurricane season began on June 1 and meteorologists say tropical storms could develop in Greenville. Local emergency management advises residents to review readiness plans (including tracking reliable weather sources) as the season unfolds.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The labor secretary discussed workforce development plans on Monday, June 1 at a local forum in Greenville. He outlined new training programs aimed at aligning local skills with job market needs.  WITN
  • Today, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins & acting Secretary of Labor met with Craven County farmers at David Parker Farms to discuss rising labor costs affecting family and first-generation operations. HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU Health is expanding its summer meals program by adding three new locations to serve free meals to kids in six communities. In Greenville, meals will be served at York Memorial AME Zion Church from June 15 to Aug. 20 (Monday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.).  WITN
