CULTURE NEWS

  • WITN’s newsroom won a regional Edward R. Murrow award for its Hard News report on ENC hospitals facing multimillion-dollar losses from federal Medicaid cuts. The win advances the team to the national competition, with winners announced in August.  WITN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The old Tobacco Warehouse will be rebuilt as part of a 19-acre research and innovation campus featuring startup workspaces, an industrial lab, and AI development. Local officials and partners say construction will start by the end of the year to drive new economic growth.  WITN
  • An inflation gauge climbed to a three-year high in April, triggering price hikes at local auto shops (oil change costs increased from $30 to $70) and prompting Real Treasure Ministry to pack up for a move to Williamston as rising costs squeeze Greenville businesses and churches.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ricky Hill leads a nearly 200-member team that keeps ECU running 24/7 with maintenance, renovations, and utility services, and he will retire on June 30, leaving behind decades of dedicated service (he plans to spend more time with family, including his soon-to-be 3-year-old granddaughter).  East Carolina University
  • ECU Health Medical Center and the Brody School of Medicine have expanded their residency program for rural communities, opening an internal medicine track this July and adding rural surgery, OB-GYN and pediatrics tracks in July 2027 at local hospitals and clinics.  WITN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A UNC-Chapel Hill study found 43 percent of buildings that flooded over two decades sat outside FEMA hazard zones, putting Greenville and nearby homeowners (in New Bern and Jacksonville) at higher risk without mandated flood insurance. Local topography shows inland areas are as vulnerable as coastal regions.  Public Radio East

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A legal battle over pandemic-era bar closures will return to the courtroom on June 9 to decide which businesses may sue the state for lost revenue. Local venues including Greenville’s Club 519 are involved, as the state seeks to remove the Bar and Tavern Association from the suit.  Public Radio East

His visit follows his order to expand youth apprenticeship programs for affordable housing in Greenville — a model that could spread statewide.  WITN
