  • A deaf 15-year-old dog that went missing on April 27 was rescued by APS officers near West Arlington Boulevard after a helpful employee spotted her in a ditch, and her family expressed relief at her safe return. Lucy is now recovering at home.  WITN
  • Greenville APS rescued a deaf dog that had been missing for three weeks and is now receiving care at a local shelter (further details are pending).  WITN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local shoppers planning Memorial Day weekend cookouts say grocery prices are higher than last year. Food Lion offers charcoal discounts for MVP cardholders while some residents choose to stay home and cook instead.  WITN
  • Travelers this Memorial Day weekend are facing higher travel expenses as airline fares have climbed over 20.7% and hotel prices increased. A Greenville resident noted that gas prices (averaging around $4.20 per gallon) are adding to holiday travel costs.  WITN

  • Attendees at ECU's Sustainability Symposium on May 18 discussed clean energy and practical steps to boost industrial solar, energy efficiency, and storage at the East Carolina Heart Institute. Key industry leaders and researchers highlighted the need for community-focused clean energy initiatives.  East Carolina University

  • NC wildlife officers are increasing patrols on local waterways for Memorial Day weekend to keep boaters and swimmers safe in our area. The checks will begin before Holiday Monday (May 25) and continue through the weekend.  WITN
  • Gov. Stein ordered all state flags to fly at half-staff from sunrise tomorrow to sunset Sunday to honor NASCAR driver Kyle Busch (who was scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600) after his passing Thursday following a short illness. The governor also urges non-state facilities to observe this gesture.  WITN

  • Greenville’s planning board approved a proposal for multifamily housing on Charles Boulevard south of Fire Tower Road. The new development is expected to change the area + additional reviews will follow.  The Daily Reflector

SPORTS NEWS

  • ECU’s Pirates beat the Rice Owls 4-3 in the AAC tournament opener on Friday morning. They will play the winner of the UTSA and Memphis game at 10 a.m. Saturday — a win that boosts their tournament position.  WITN
  • The ECU Pirates won a 4-3 game over Rice on Friday and advanced into the winner's bracket of the conference tournament. They will play today at 10 a.m. against either UTSA or Memphis in the semifinal round.  WITN
  • D.H. Conley softball beat Heritage 4-1 Friday to set up the rubber match for a state championship bid in the 7A East Regional. Head Coach Wayne Deans noted that fresh input from freshman Brooke Rose and junior Kendall Howard helped, and the schedule for the series against Weddington will be set Monday.  WITN
