COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AAA expects 45.1 million travelers nationwide, including 1.3 million North Carolinians, to hit the roads this Memorial Day weekend, and warns that new Real ID requirements may cause delays at major airports. Local officials advise travelers to prepare their vehicles and leave early on Thursday and Friday + lower gas prices may help cut costs for those taking road trips.  WITN
  • The City of Greenville will host the Match and Market Carnival on June 13 at the 3rd Floor Gallery in City Hall. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. — it offers free food, games and prizes with a prize drawing at 1:30 p.m.  WNCT
  • Preservation North Carolina announced that the historic J.W. Higgs House was sold to local buyers (city councilman Matt Skully, his wife Erin, and architect Kathryn Ross) after it faced a demolition threat, and it will be restored as a community art hub and boutique bed and breakfast in Greenville.  WITN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Stantonsburg Road that closed eastbound lanes from Moye Boulevard to Memorial Drive—westbound lanes remained open as drivers were advised to use alternate routes.  WITN

CRIME NEWS

  • Greenville police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred Thursday morning at Burger King on 1702 Stantonsburg Road—employees report the suspect entered through the back door, showed a gun and escaped with cash while detectives gather details on his appearance.  WITN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greenville City Council approved a municipal agreement with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to build a safe pedestrian pathway from Eppes Recreation Center to the crossing at Memorial Drive — Third Street with new sidewalks, a 10-foot path, and roadway lighting on wood poles. Most of the funding is provided by the state's Carbon Reduction Program and requires a $66,000 local match, and the project will be completed within the next year.  WNCT
  • Pitt County commissioners updated the FY 2025-26 budget after adding about $6 million earlier this month and then voting to add $27,000—funding the farmers market.  The Daily Reflector

HEALTH NEWS

  • ECU Health hosted its 13th annual Mental Health Expo on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eastern AHEC on 2600 W. Arlington Blvd. More than 40 local service organizations were available to answer questions about mental health and substance abuse services.  WITN
