  • A shooting event to raise funds for a local charity is planned in Greenville. Organizers said more details on time and location will be announced soon.  WITN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Carolinas held its BBB Awards Ceremony on April 30 in Raleigh and announced the winners for the BBB Torch Awards and scholarships. A Greenville teenager was named a BBB Torch Scholarship recipient for leadership and service — a Washington woman won the BBB Spark Award for her boutique and community program.  WNCT

CRIME NEWS

  • Greenville police arrested 25-year-old Kristen Coward early this morning when she hit her neighbor’s apartment door with an axe at 803 Peed Drive and then ran into her apartment without dropping the tool — she was charged with property damage and resisting a public officer — and is now held in Pitt County Jail on a $2,000 bond.  WITN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Brody School of Medicine graduates matched into residency programs on May 2—more than one in five chose ECU Health, and local native Jennifer Jernigan will begin her emergency medicine—internal medicine residency at ECU Health Medical Center in July. The graduates are set to carry their commitment to serve eastern North Carolina forward.  East Carolina University
  • Martina Muzzolon did very well on the tennis court, in class, and in community work at ECU after a hard start as an international student from Padua, Italy — she faced language and new life challenges. She earned awards for academics and service and now plans to earn a master’s degree while her family comes from Italy to see her graduate.  East Carolina University
  • Deallaney Hudson, a 20-year-old Greenville native with neonatal progeroid syndrome, has overcome major health challenges—including being wheelchair-bound since back surgery on July 1—as she prepares to participate in ECU commencement later this week. She is majoring in recreational therapy, holds leadership roles in school and the community, and will start a 13-week internship at ECU Health after graduation.  East Carolina University
  • ECU Chief of Police Jason Sugg received his Ph.D. in rhetoric, writing and professional communication from the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences on Friday—he has served in the ECU Police Department for 26 years and will continue his work while exploring new academic projects.  East Carolina University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Greenville is now charging a $25 fee for residents who leave waste carts at the curb after trash pickup — a rule meant to speed up clean-up. The GREAT bus hour is extended starting Monday — giving residents more time to use the service.  The Daily Reflector
  • The Pitt County Board of Commissioners will meet on Monday, May 5 at 6:00 p.m. in the Eugene James Auditorium at the County Administration Building on 1717 West 5th Street in Greenville—the meeting will not be live broadcast but will be available for viewing the following day on PittTV and YouTube.  Pitt County
  • A section of US 264 in Greenville will be paved starting May 5 by Fred Smith Co. workers who will work on the three-mile stretch from US 13 to Pactolus Highway. The project will last one month—work will be done during the day and at night at the highway intersection—if weather permits.  WNCT
