CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, police arrested Thelma Green, a 64-year-old resident at her apartment on Fleming Street after finding cocaine and drug paraphernalia; she now faces charges including drug trafficking and is held at Pitt County Jail on a $200,000 bond with a court hearing scheduled for this afternoon. - ➤ A 29-year-old man was arrested by ECU Health Police outside ECU Health Medical Center at 8:00 p.m. April 30 for possessing an AK-47-style pistol + he remains in jail on a $5,000 bond while officials confirmed there was no threat to the public. WITN

- ➤ Helen Holloway, a 5th-grade teacher at Wintergreen Intermediate School with 18 years of experience, was named Teacher of the Week — local nominations praised her engaging lessons and commitment to her students. WITN
- ➤ North Carolina fell to 43rd in the nation for average teacher pay on April 30 as teachers earned about $14,000 less than the national average + education leaders urge the state to shift priorities to attract quality educators. Public Radio East
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Van Smith, president of ECU Health Community Hospitals, was elected as an at-large delegate to the American Hospital Association’s Regional Policy Board 3 and will serve until Dec. 31 — he will bring 25 years of health care leadership experience to help improve rural access in eastern North Carolina. - ➤ On April 30, the American Cancer Society held a private event in Greenville to recognize ECU Health’s partnership for the McConnell-Raab Hope Lodge, the only Hope Lodge in North Carolina that offered 4,785 free nights to cancer patients last year. The facility opened in 2002, provides 20 guest rooms, a library and community spaces for patients living over 40 miles from treatment centers — a benefit that helps offset high travel and lodging costs as ECU Health treats over 80,000 patients a year.
