EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU trustees did not limit auxiliary funds after debating the use of student fees to cover athletics deficits last week at the university. Board members said their discussion highlighted ongoing concerns over funding college athletics.  The Daily Reflector
  • East Carolina University announced plans to expand the Chancellor’s Scholars Initiative by matching donations to fund 300 endowed scholarships and support 75 additional incoming students each fall (aiming to build lasting opportunities for local talented students).  East Carolina University
  • ECU discontinued 44 academic programs and will merge its College of Health and Human Performance with Allied Health Sciences by July 1 as part of a $25 million budget cut targeting low enrollment and graduation rates. Current students have teach-out plans while new enrollments in these programs are closed.  Public Radio East
  • ECU honored outstanding student employees and supervisors on April 21 during ECU Student Employment Week (April 20-24) as more than 3,000 students who work on campus were recognized.   • Pitt County School Board voted to schedule a teacher workday for Friday at local schools. This decision gives educators extra planning time as they prepare for the next week.  WITN

  • The American Lung Association ranked the Greenville-Washington metro among the best for high-ozone days, meaning the air is safe for outdoor activities — experts say residents can help keep it clean by driving less and biking more.  WITN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials confirmed a fox near East Hanrahan Road and Highway Eleven in Grifton tested positive for rabies, urging pet owners to check vaccine records; the county will host a $10 drive-thru rabies clinic at the Greenville office on Saturday.  Public Radio East
