EDUCATION NEWS

  • ECU will discontinue 44 programs starting this fall as part of a fiscal health initiative to save $25 million over a three-year period. The university planned these changes to improve efficiency and better manage costs.  The Daily Reflector
  • Dr. Phil Lewis will serve as dean at ECU’s College of Engineering and Technology starting July 1. He brings 20 years in academia + 14 years in construction and engineering to guide the college’s future.  WITN

  • Record-breaking drought conditions persist in eastern counties as local rivers hit historic lows and water systems enforce emergency conservation plans.   • State and federal investigators examined the Falkland post office after a fire on Apr. 24, and they are assessing the site for further clues.  WITN
  • The Justice Department announced the federal reclassification of state-authorized medical cannabis from Schedule One to Schedule Three yesterday, opening a research path for local institutions (including UNC and Duke) and prompting administrative hearings on broader rescheduling set for June 29.  Public Radio East

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Pitt County Health Department confirmed a rabid fox (near East Hanrahan Road and Highway 11 in Grifton) while ensuring there is no danger to people or pets. A pet vaccination clinic is scheduled for May 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the department for 200 animals.  WITN
  • Pitt County Health Department confirmed a positive rabies case in a fox near E Hanrahan Road & Highway 11 in Grifton on April 24. A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic for pets will be held Saturday, May 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Government Circle in Greenville.  Pitt County
